Apple Sharlotka

I made this beauty last year during the middle of apple season. An easy but impress-your-friends Apple Sharlotka! It works for dessert. Or breakfast. Or a (several, ahem) snack(s)! Dusted with a little powdered sugar or a dollop of whipped cream, this sweet treat is a great alternative to the tried-but-true-but-sometimes-boring apple pie.

Apple Sharlotka

Ingredients:
butter to grease a 9" springform pan
6 large apples
3 large eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup flour
cinnamon and powdered sugar for dusting

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Line the bottom of a 9" springform pan with a circle of parchment. Butter the sides and bottom.

Peel apples. Cut in half, core and chop into fairly thin (1/4 inch) pieces. Pile into pan.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until thick and ribbons can form on the surface of the eggs. Beat in vanilla, then add flour. Stir gently with a spoon until the batter is just combined. The batter will be thick!

Pour batter over the apples and use a spatula to squish down/spread it into the apples. Smoosh it/press down into the cracks until the batter is level with the apples in the pan.

Bake 55-60 minutes until a tester comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes on a rack, then flip the cake out onto another rack, take off the parchment and flip onto a serving plate. Dust with cinnamon and powdered sugar when ready to serve. I enjoyed this both warm and chilled :)

"Love Apples" at their peak!

Did you know that an early Italian or Spanish marketeer, in an attempt to enthuse European's palates, labeled tomatoes an aphrodisiac and coined the term poma amoris. Hence, tomatoes became known as "Love Apples". Even just a glance of these beauties and certainly with a taste, tomato lovers get why they were named as such.

What about SIW's Love Apples? Well, after a brief period between patches, our tomatoes, both Heirlooms and our Fabulous field tomatoes (Fabulous is the name of the variety we grow!) are back in full force. The cooler nights slow down the ripening in the field but we have plenty of amazingly delicious "love apples" to choose from. They will continue till frost so we have lots of good eatin' to come.

We've already had a couple of batches made this year of our simply delicious Tomato Sauce. Get yours by the pint or quart, or if you want to stock up for the winter, or get some to bring to your friends, we offer a 10% discount on full cases. We have our classic tomato, onion and garlic; classic with Basil; and we offer a limited edition Heirloom variety.

And what else goes better with tomatoes than fresh Artisan Bread? These guys (LeBus Bakery) make some pretty awesome bread and foccacia. They are delivered fresh, every day. ENJOY!!!

Doc Martins have arrived!

At last, the Doc Martin Limas have come to full season. We picked over 20 crates in the last few days—we have plenty available for sale by the pound or by the case. Enjoy them while you can.
The pies have been spectacular this summer. Marie, the pie baker behind My House Cookies, has been turning out some amazing specialties this summer. All different in-season fruit varieties and a superb Key Lime.

And although they signal the impending end of summer (which for many must be a good thing this year!) the local apples and Asian pears have come in.
